chapter 1
The sound of the shell
A twelve-year-old boy described as the ‘fair boy’ named Ralph, was the first one who appeared on the scene. He observed his surroundings and found another boy in the lagoon where he examined. The other boy was named Piggy. Both had a conversation about their situation: There was a war, group of lost boys were supposed to be evacuated from the distraction but their plane crashed and they were stuck in a deserted tropical island.
Ralph and Piggy had a contrast between their appearances and even their personalities, Ralph who is more independent and calm and also was described as the ‘fair boy’, and Piggy who’s chubby, has asthma, and wears thick specs. Piggy was more dependent to his so-called ‘Auntie’ and worries what they should do next in the island without adult supervision.
Ralph was overjoyed to be in the tropical island but Piggy contradicts to Ralph’s opinion. Both went to the jungle and examined the place, leading them to the shore. Ralph didn’t really have an interest about Piggy at first. While examining and showed his swimming abilities at the beach or lagoon they went, Ralph found an enormous, special shell, called as the ‘conch’, wherein Piggy had discovered that it could be used as a loud trumpet. Piggy pushed Ralph to blow the shell to find out if there are other boys that survived in the island also.
As time passed by, boys aged between 6-12 gushed out from the jungle onto the beach and joined in Ralph on the platform. Jack and the choirboys arrived last; these boys still wore their costumes despite the tropical heat in the island.
During the assembly, the boys decided to vote for having a ‘chief’ to be in charge. There were two candidates; Ralph and Jack. Ralph won over Jack; as the chief, Ralph proposed Jack to become in charge of the choirboys, calling them as the ‘hunters.’ Jack was agitated to have such little authority for his group. While they were introducing themselves at the assembly, Ralph knew Piggy’s nickname was ‘Piggy’ before Piggy introduced his real name. Piggy didn’t want to be called as ‘Piggy’ due to past experiences.
Ralph wanted to do a search party to find out that if they were truly on an island. To get along with the other group, Jack shows off that he possesses a sheathed knife.
Piggy was offended that he wasn’t accepted to be in the search group, but thoughtfully, Ralph gave him a job to list the names of all the boys that stayed in the platform and to watch over them.
Ralph, Jack and Simon confirmed that the island that they were in is abandoned. During their search and adventure, the three had built up a relationship between them. On their way back to the platform, they have encountered a swine that was trapped in the jungle vines, this experience tested Jack’s skills in hunting. Jack pulled out his sheathed knife but didn’t have the guts to see its blood, unfortunately, the swine escaped; he then promised himself that next time he sees another swine, he will follow and kill it.
Questions:
1. Was it the right choice to vote someone as a leader?
2. Did the boys choose the right leader to guide them while they're stuck in the island?

chapter 2
Fire on the mountain
As the explorers, Ralph, Jack and Simon, return to the platform, Ralph blew the conch shell, signaling the boys to have a meeting on the beach. Ralph told and warned the group that there were no adults that would supervise them on the island and that they have to organize certain things to look after them.
Jack reminded Ralph of the pig they saw in the jungle, and Ralph agreed that they needed hunters to kill animals for meat. As the leader, Ralph decided that during meetings, the one who’s holding the conch shell would have the right to speak at the assembly and the other members must listen until its their turn to hold the conch shell. Jack agreed to this concept.
Piggy complained about the fact that nobody knows that they were stuck on an island and that they could be stuck there for a long period of time. The thought that they were stranded on a deserted island for a long time was too traumatic for most of the boys especially the ‘littluns’ and the entire group of boys were terrified by the thought too.
One of the younger boys, a small kid with a mulberry-colored mark on his face, claimed that he saw some strange snakelike called the “beastie” or a monster the night before. This traumatized the group about the prospect that there was a monster with them in that plundering island. Though the little boys or the ‘littluns’ were terrified, the older boys or the ‘biguns’ tried to reassure the whole group that there was no monster in the island, which they’re staying. The older boys told them that the little boy’s vision was only a dream or a nightmare.
As Ralph thinks about a chance of getting rescued, Ralph proposed to the group to build and keep a huge signal fire on top of the island’s mountain, so that if any ships pass, they might see the smoke and know that someone was ensnared on that island. The boys were enthusiastic by the idea, they all went straight up to the mountain while both Ralph and Piggy watch them from behind. Piggy didn’t stop complaining about the childishness and the dumbness of the group.
When they arrived at the peak of the mountain, the boys gathered and collected a pile of dead wood and used the lenses of Piggy’s specs to light up the wood on fire. As they waited for a little while, they successfully managed to get a large fire on going, but it went down quickly. Piggy whined about the stupidity of the group again, telling them to watch their actions if they want to get off the island as quickly as possible, but his words were too mainstream that no one cared to follow it. Jack’s group agreed to volunteer to let the signal fire going. As Jack’s group was too disorganized, the boys burned all of the trees down. Piggy witnessed the distraction and was furious about their actions, telling the group that the little boy—same boy who discussed about the snakelike “beastie”—who was playing with the fire and now is missing. The boys were disconsolate about the news and were shocked, which made Ralph felt ashamed. After the incident, they pretended that nothing has happened.
Questions:
1. What made the littlun, Percival have the idea that there's a 'beastie' in the island?
2. Was it a good idea that Ralph denied that there's 'beastie' in the island?

chapter 3
huts on the beach
As Jack went hunting alone for swine, he unmistakably learned some skills and tactics in tracking a swine. He was exasperated because his day ended without having a chance to catch a swine. Jack returned to the jungle area where Ralph and Simon were building shelters for the group.
Ralph releases his disappointed, even though some of the boys agreed to help him build the shelters, but it was just Simon who put hard work and time in building shelters with him. Most of the boys were just goofing around, swimming, playing on the beach, or hunting with Jack, with the fact that Jack’s group still failed to catch a swine for meat. Ralph tried to accentuate to the group, that building shelters were one of the priority. But Jack insisted that he and the other boys needed to meat and explained to Ralph that he has the urge to hunt since it was his obligation to produce meat for the whole group. In this situation, and a hint that showed the conflict between the two characters, Ralph and Jack are beginning to bloom. This made both of the boys really uncomfortable about their relationship in the beginning of the book while they were on the adventure in examining the island.
There was a side of Simon that was revealed in this chapter. He made and had his own secret place in the jungle, kind of like hut made of vines, trees and few boulders. After he aided Ralph in building the shelters by the beach, he ran off to his hideout, before he went, he asked some of the littluns where he can get fruits and made sure that no one was following him.
Questions:
1. Why did Simon decide to just join Ralph instead of joining his fellow littluns?
2. Does Jack's actions towards tells us that savagery is starting to show up?

chapter 4
painted faces and long hair
Time went by, the life on the island for the boys became a daily routine. Their mornings were pleasant, with cool breeze and the sweet smells, the boys were happily playing around the beach. On afternoons, with the oppressing tropical heat, some of the boys took naps, even if they were disturbed by the strange images they saw that glimmered over the water. Piggy tried to cut the visions that the other boys saw on the water and told them that those were just caused by the sunlight striking the liquid. As the evening comes, the temperature lowers, but darkness was quick, and nighttime for the boys were tough and terrifying.
The littluns, who spend their days, by either eating or playing, were disturbed by their nightmares. They kept confessing and continued to talk about the ‘beastie’ and that there was a monster that’s hunting them especially in the dark. Since they eat large amounts of fruits, this caused them to have severe stomachaches and diarrhea. Even though the littluns lived discretely from the older boys, it still happened that some of the older boys bully the littluns. There was this boy, Roger, joined another boy named Maurice in destroying the sand castle that the littluns built. Roger even threw stones to one of the littluns, but avoided to really hit the little boy with the stones.
In this chapter, Jack became obsessed in murdering and hunting swine, and drew his face a camouflage using clay and charcoal and went to the jungle to hunt with the company of the other boys. On the beach, Ralph and Piggy perceived a ship on the ocean—but they realized that the signal fire went down already. They rushed to the top of the hill, but it was too late to bring the fire up again, and the ship didn’t notice them. Ralph was outraged by Jack’s actions because he thought that it was the hunters’ responsibility to keep the fire going.
When Jack and his group returned from the jungle, dressed with blood and chanting a strange song. They carried a swine that was placed on a stake between them while going uphill. Ralph was furious about the hunters’ irresponsibility, he blamed Jack about the fire signal. By this time, the hunters accomplished murdering a swine and were hyped about their success. Due to their euphoric feelings, they didn’t listen to Ralph’s complaints about their irresponsibility. When Piggy murmured about Jack’ and the hunters’ futility and negligence, Jack slapped him hard, which led to breaking one of the Piggy’s lenses. Jack insults Piggy by following his voice grouchy voice. Ralph and Jack had a steaming conversation about the event. Eventually, Jack admitted his wrongness and failure about his responsibility in keeping the fire going, but didn’t say sorry to what he’s done to Piggy. Ralph went to Piggy and borrowed his glasses, leaving only with one lens to light a fire. This time, Jack’s feelings towards Ralph became bitter. When the boys roasted the pig, the hunters were dancing uncontrollably around the fire, singing and doing some kind of rituals of the savagery of the hunt. Ralph told them that he’ll be calling a meeting and went down to the beach alone.
Questions:
1. With the idea, that destroying the castle that the littluns built was wrong, why did Maurice and the other boys decided to destroy it anyways?
2. If Jack and the hunters helped Ralph built shelters, would savagery still start to show up?

chapter 5
BEAST FROM WATER
In this chapter, Ralph called an assembly to his fellow group mates on the platform. He reminded everyone about their agreement in maintaining fresh water supplies, observe cleanliness, build shelters, and always keep the fire going. He then added to the discussion about the fear that was building up in the boys’ minds and he knew that it was starting to overwhelm most of them while they were talking about it on the platform. The sun was setting down and the darkness was falling during that time.
Jack took the conch and pointed out to them that if there was really a beastie on the island they’re trapped in, he would meet it while he was hunting with the other boys. Piggy had mentioned that the field of psychology could be used as an aid to explain to the other boys in a logical way about the fear that they’re experiencing, confirming that it was for real. When a littlun went forward and described what he saw in the jungle in detail the before, Simon revealed to them that it was just him, heading to his secret hideout. Percival, the littlun also opened up that there was a ‘beast’ that could pop out from the sea, then falls asleep on the shore, from Percival’s perspective.
Questions:
1. What made Ralph give up his position as the chief?
2. If the beastie isn't real, why do the other boys always bring up the idea that's there's truly a 'beastie' in the island?

chapter 6
beast from air
As the boys faced the darkness, late that night, Ralph and Simon brought a littlun on their arms to the shelter that they’ve built before going to sleep. As they all slept, there were military airplanes that were battling on the horizon. None of them saw the distractions up there in the clouds, because the twins ‘Samneric’ or Sam and Eric fell asleep as they were supposed to keep the signal fire going. During the battle on the horizon, a parachutist landed down from the sky onto the island, on his death. His parachute got tangled in some of the rocks and folded in the wind, while his shadow showed an image that’s terrifying. His head kind of rose and fell as the wind blew it.
When the twins, ‘Samneric’, Sam and Eric have awakened, they tend to make the flames of the fire brighter. As the firelight flickered, they saw the twisted form of the dead parachutist and mistaken to the see image as the ‘beastie’. They went back to the platform quickly, woke Ralph up, and told him what they have seen. Ralph instantly called to have an assembly, at the meeting the twins opened up to the group about what they have seen and claimed that they actually saw the monster. Most of the boys shivered while hearing the news about what the twins saw. They organized an expedition to the island and examined if there was really a beast, they sorted out some wooden spears, and the littluns were left with Piggy.
Ralph decided to let Jack lead the group as they search for that ‘beastie.’ The boys reached the part of the island wherein none of them never been to or explored before. – It was a slim walkway that led to hill flecked with little caves. The boys didn’t want to walk over the place because they were all afraid about the ledge of the hill, Ralph went to the place and it examined it alone. He found out that, even if he was frightened when he was with the other boys, but he regained his strength and confidence quickly as he investigated independently. Jack followed Ralph to the cave.
The group of boys climbed up the hill, and Ralph and Jack felt the old bond between them that they used to have at first. The other boys with them started to play some games, throwing and pushing rocks to the sea, and a lot of them lost their direction and purpose about their expedition. Ralph reminded them heatedly that the purpose of their expedition was that they were supposed to look for the beast. He also told them that it was mandatory for the group to return to the mountain so that they can still rebuild the signal fire for rescue. The other boys were lost in their playful thought and plans to build a fort and do other silly things on the hill, which didn’t meet Ralph’s standards and commands but still continued doing it.
Questions:
1. Would Ralph still be considered as good leader by wanting to examine the unknown part of the island alone?
2. Is there going to be a conflict if Jack followed what Ralph told him by not following him in the unexplored part of the island?

CHAPTER 7
SHADOWS and TALL TREES
As the group made their way back to the jungle, Ralph felt anxious about how disorganized and chaotic he’s becoming. Frustrated by what he’s becoming and what he’s done, he spent time alone at the sea wondering about how high or low the possibilities of being rescued on the island. Simon joined him and being really intuitive about Ralph’s thoughts, he encouraged Ralph that they will make it back home.
On their way to the mountaintop, Jack led a swine hunt wherein he got a little bit wounded. Ralph experienced his first swine hunt, as he strikes the boar in the snout with his wooden spear. When the boar went away, the group began to bully Ralph about his disability in hunting. Ralph pushed the group to go back to the platform, but the hard path before them hampers their progress to their way back. Simon, with full generosity, volunteered to cross the island alone to inform Piggy that the other boys won’t be home until after the darkness fall.
By the time they’ve reached their destination which was the base of the mountain, the darkness has fallen. As the other boys were driven by Jack’s audacity, Ralph, Jack and Roger volunteered to continue the expedition for searching the beastie as the other boys go back to the platform. As they reached the burnt patch, Ralph, irritated by Jack’s never ending mockery, he then confronted Jack and dared him to go to on alone; as Jack returned to where they waited, he was frightened and traumatized by what he saw. Roger and Ralph also examined what was on the top of the mountain; they were as terrified as Jack was. The image that they saw was the ‘beastie.’ It was the dead parachutist that appeared to have an ape-like structure, which seemed like it was looking at them when the breeze blows to his parachute, to the extent of their imagination. Ralph, Jack and Roger went back to the platform as quick as possible.
Questions:
1. What caused Ralph to not have hope of being rescued?

CHAPTER 8
GIFT FOR THE DARKNESS
As the sun went up, the news about the monster made the boys’ minds disturbed as they gathered on the beach. The little boys he was watching over claimed to see the ‘monster’ and that perplexed Piggy. Jack took the conch shell and blows it gauchely, to call an assembly. Jack told the group that there was unquestionably a beast on top of the mountain and straightforwardly told the group that Ralph was a coward who must kicked out from his role as the leader of the group. However, the other boys refused to Jack’s idea and refused to let Ralph out of power. Infuriated, Jack, made his own group, and told them that he’s leaving and that whoever wants to join his tribe is welcome.
Troubled and frustrated, Ralph didn’t know what he was supposed to do. Meanwhile, Piggy is electrified about Jack leaving the group, and Simon suggested that they must all return to that mountain where they found the beast and continue to search for it. But the other boys contradicted to this idea since they were all scared to take action. Ralph slipped into sadness, but Piggy tried to encourage him with an intellectual idea: that they should and build another signal fire on the beach instead on top of the mountain. Piggy helped restored Ralph’s determination and hope that they will be rescued. The boys were eager to start their work in building a new fire, but number of boys went to join Jack’s tribe instead. Piggy did his best to convince Ralph that they were better off without those run-aways.
On the other side of the island, Jack gathered his new crew or tribe and declared himself as the chief of the tribe. In a savage type state, the hunters killed a sow, and Roger drove out his wooden spear violently to the sow’s private parts. Then the boys placed the sow’s head on a well-sharpened stake in the jungle and used this as an offering to the beast. As they placed the head rigid through the forest, the black blood was dripping down from the sow’s teeth, and the boys escaped as fast they could.
When Piggy and Ralph sat on the old place where they always had meetings, talking about the run-aways, the hunters from Jack’s tribe, disturbed them, squealing and hooting for some bizarre reason. The hunters stole the burning sticks from the fire that they’ve built on the beach. Jack told Ralph’s group mates that they were welcome to join the feast on that night and also join the new tribe has been formed by him. The hungry boys in Ralph’s group were tempted by Jack’s propaganda by eating pig’s meat.
Before Jack’s tribe invaded the beach, Simon slips and went away from the camp and went to his hideout. On his way to the jungle, he saw the sow’s head on the stake, with flies flying around it. As Simon sat on the clearing, his attention was warped to the sow’s head that was swarmed with flies. He even saw that it was coming to life. The head spoke to Simon with its voice of ‘The Lord of the Flies,’ threateningly told Simon that he would never escape him, for he is in every human being. He even promised Simon that they would have some fun together. But Simon, was troubled and traumatized by the ghoul, Simon fainted.
Questions:
1. Does the beastie literally exists?
2. Why does Jack keep on inviting Ralph even if he didn't find the fire important?
Jack told Ralph’s group mates that they were welcome to join the feast on that night and also join the new tribe has been formed by him. chapter 9
A view to death
As the storm rumble on the island, Simon awakened from his faint and made his way back to his destination. He found the parachutist’s body and he examined it, and he came into his senses and realized about the real identity of what he saw. From Simon’s point of view, he saw that most of the boys were at fire at Jack’s tribe, so decided to head to Jack’s camp to give out the news. Simon was really weak due to what happened on his way to the mountain, he can’t even walk properly.
Ralph and Piggy realized that the other ‘biguns’ went and joined Jack’s party. They both went too, due to their curiosity and hunger. Jack permitted them to eat the meat but when everyone was finished devouring, Jacks calls out to all of the boys to choose on which side they’re joining, is it Ralph’s group or Jack’s tribe? Ralph told the boys to remain with him and reminded them that they voted for him in the first place. But Jack had a strong hold among the other boys; however, he played as the tribal chief.
Jack ordered everyone to do a dance ritual in return to the favor of the rain. Ralph and Piggy joined. Surprisingly, Simon popped out from the forest and went into the center of the dance circle. He tried to convince them about the true identity of the beast that they have seen from the mountain, unfortunately, he barely made himself heard over because of the storm and now the boys chanted violently. Influenced by the momentum of the dance, the group turned to Simon and killed him as if he was the beast. The rain went harder and the boys backed off, which left Simon’s body floating towards the beach. The tides carried away Simon’s body.
Due to the storms strong wind, the dead parachutist’s body was lifted up over the island and out to the ocean. This vision left the boys terrified and they scattered, crying and screaming.
Questions:
1. Were Ralph and Piggy suspects of a murder scene?
2. What made the boys think that it was the beastie and not their fellow group mate?

chapter 10
the shell and the glasses
The next day, Ralph and Piggy met on the beach. They got bruised and sore and felt pretty ashamed of their actions last night. Piggy, who was unable to face what his role was in Simon’s death case, inferred that what happened about last night’s tragedy was just an accident. But Ralph, gripping the conch and laughing riotously, insisted that they were one of the suspects on Simon’s death. Piggy complained and denied that he was part of it. Both of them were literally alone; except the two Sam and Eric and a trickle of littluns decided to unite with Jack’s tribe, wherein their headquarters is at the Castle Rock, on the mountain of the island.
Jack began to show his true colors as a cruel and selfish dictator to his tribe, giving them orders that were too much. One of the boys in his tribe didn’t follow his command so they tied him up and beat him due to not meeting his standards. Jack planned to raid Ralph’s camp again to use the fire to roast another swine and tried to persuade his troubled followers that they only beaten the swine but not murdered it from last night’s party. The beast visited them in disguise; In full denial, Jack averred that they didn’t murder one of their former group mate, Simon.
Back there at Ralph’s camp, the boys made a decision to let the fire die for one night and that they should just collect more woods in the dark. Since Jack and his followers can’t steal the branches with fire, they attacked Ralph’s group and purposely stole Piggy’s specs.
Questions:
1. If Jack asked for the fire with politeness would there be chaos?
2. Does the conch still counted as important symbol in the island?

castle rock
Ralph called another assembly insisting Piggy. The four biguns that were left in Ralph’s group decided to ask Jack politely, to give back Piggy’s specs and remind them that how important it is to get the signal fire on going. The twins, Sam and Eric showed their real feelings of fear in approaching the other tribe who’s already been wholly savages.
Jack’s group was surly to Ralph’s small group; Roger threw stones at Sam and Eric in order to scare them. Jack appeared from the jungle where he hunted swine, and told Ralph that they should just go back to their camp, which was located at the end of the island. But when Ralph, shouted that Jack was a thief for stealing Piggy’s specs, they formed clearly with their wooden spears before Piggy and reminded Ralph to just focus on their own business.
The savages or the mugs, laughed deliriously at Ralph’s speech about the importance of having a signal fire up. Jack, ordered his tribe to snatch Samneric and tie them up viciously, encouraging Ralph and himself to have a fistfight. As usual, Piggy interrupted their conversation again, while holding the conch, and then he attempted to do a speech of his own as well. While Piggy was delivering his speech about how the boys in Jack’s group became savages, Roger freed an enormous rock, directly hitting Piggy, which led to knock Piggy off the cliff to his death on the rocks below the mountain. And a large wave carried his body away and floated him desolately.
Jack, overjoyed by his accomplishment, he then threw the spear to Ralph. Ralph was quite wounded but the spear just bounced off him. After this, Ralph ran for his life. But Samneric remained tied up in their hands by the savages. They twins were threatened by Jack and soon will be tortured by Roger.
Questions:
1. If Ralph and Piggy were aware that going to Jack's territory is dangerous, why did they decide to go anyways?
2. If Piggy didn't go with Ralph, would he still survive ?

chapter 12
Cry of the hunters
Ralph hid in the jungle and thought about the misery and the chaos that’s happening on the island. He though about the deaths of both, Simon and Piggy and realized that all signs of civilization was lost. He stumbled on the sow’s head, the Lord of the Flies, was now just a white skull—as white the conch shell was. Furious and dismayed, Ralph knocked down the skull and took the stake and uses it as a weapon against the savage, Jack.
During that night, Ralph sneaked down to the camp of Jack located at the Castle Rock and found the twins Sam and Eric who were securing the entrance of the camp. Samneric gave Ralph some food but refused to join him since Jack threatened them. The twins told and warned Ralph about Jack’s wicked plan about him for the next day.
Ralph found a place to sleep for the night. That morning, Ralph’s hiding place, was a tiny thicket, the twins betrayed Ralph. But fortunately, Ralph set the boulders on fire just on time before the savages caught him. After this, Ralph ran and Jack’s tribe energetically followed him while communicating with each other with ululating cries.
Ralph found a hiding place; unfortunately he had to find another hiding place because the tribe discovered him after. The fire that Ralph set on the thicket where he was supposed to be trapped was now spreading across the island. And luckily, Ralph outran the savages again. Ralph made it to the beach, meeting a British naval officer, whose ship noticed the fire that was put up on the island. The British officer told them that he would take them off from that tropical island. Ralph broke into tears and realized his loss.
Questions:
1. If the British Naval officer didn't see the smoke of the burning forest, what would happen to Ralph? And the boys who were chasing him?
2. What made Ralph and the other boys cry? Was it about guilt or relief that rescue came?
