EARLY YEARS ; GROWING UP ; INTERESTS
William Gerald Golding also known as William Golding was born in Cornwall, England, on September 19th in the year 1911. Golding’s parents were both English. His mother, Mildred was an active suffragette in the Women’s Suffrage movement (a movement wherein women can have the right to vote) and his father, Alex was the principal or headmaster of a school. Golding’s father had a great impact and influence over him. Golding had his interests on writing ever since he was in the age of seven. He even attempted to write a novel when he was about twelve years old. He had his own favorite authors inspiring him to write his own pieces, the authors he admired were, HG Wells, (1866–1946), Jules Verne (1828–1905), and Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950). Sir Golding always had an interest in literature.
EDUCATION
Golding attended college in the year 1930 at Brasenose College at Oxford, England. With respect about his father’s beliefs, he then pursued two years studying science to fulfill his father’s desire. But Golding had his own true interests, which was writing, after finishing what his father wanted him to study; he then decided to shift to literature course. Golding’s favorite field in literature was fiction but in his younger age he always wanted to write poetry. While still in Oxford, some of Golding’s poetry pieces were published as a part of Macmillan’s Contemporary Poets series. After five years, in 1935, Golding graduated and received his diploma with a Bachelor of Arts in English and education.
